Abingdon is located only 8 miles (13km) south of Oxford. Abingdon was once the county town of Berkshire but became part of Oxfordshire in 1974. It was once the proud home of the MG sports car the town it is now home to The Abingdon Business Park Abingdon Science Park and Milton Park which include many new industries, established on spacious, light industrial estates and Science Parks, including computing, the manufacture of scientific instruments and cosmetics.
Abingdon is close to several major scientific employers the UKAEA at Culham (including the Joint European Torus (JET) fusion research project), Harwell Laboratory, the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the new Diamond Light Source synchrotron, which is the largest UK-funded scientific facility to be built for over 40 years.
